THE SETS ARE BACK! HURRAY! BUT HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR DIRECTOR?
It’s really hard to share with the rules imposed by the last agreement, isn’t it? But if you’re about to start again I wish you fabulous sets! The first ones who succeed in setting up productions are certainly more likely to succeed! There is a market share left empty to fill!
Knowing for many years my sector and seeing all the colors, but I ask you:
How do you choose your director? The keystone of your success and the custodian of your financial investment?
We discard: “good living rooms”, “ball games” and any form of recommendation where the “risk” is covered by others. Unfortunately, you know what I’m talking about.
So how do you protect your work and your success?
If you’re thinking, based on “how much personal money he brings in,” I’d better stop reading. It’s kind of like I’m saying to choose the architect for your house based on how much money he puts into your building!
Do you take advantage of the success of Youtuber? I would say that out of their context, they did not sparkle.
At festivals? Not bad, but don’t you think they highlight a certain type of cinema? We are not all Francesco Rosi and many, who are perhaps excellent directors, for this reason they will never jump to the headlines.
How many festivals did Tarantino win before being Tarantino? And Fellini as a director? Other times, I know. So what about serial directors like Dark, Ozark or the Paper House?
I’d be like this if I were you:
✔ I would search the web for newspapers, critiques, interviews, comments or news. Transparency first of all. We’re not looking for the headlines, but if there’s not a single word, the risk of boasters is high.
✔ If you found something, read his story. How he got himself talked about. Look at his productions. If it is all the result of his sacrifices, then he has the determination and the will to achieve success with you.
✔ Ask what they say about him, how he works on the set. But especially how he grew over the years.
✔ Look at the creativity (maybe if he has a showreel of his main works, as an example below I put mine) and how much he dares with the framing and storytelling. If it adds something new, in times of creativity so hard tested, surely it can bring out the novelty that makes you hit the box office!
✔ If you have done all this, you have the overwhelming probability of being successful and an authoritative guide on the set, certainly at a lower cost than those who no longer want to question.
